SUMMARY:20th WEGENER Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Since more than 40 years ago\, WEGENER has brought together geoscientists who want to collaborate on the application of space and terrestrial geodetic techniques to the study of geodynamics in the Alpine–Mediterranean plate boundary region. \nDuring the past decade\, WEGENER has broadened its scopes beyond the Mediterranean and Geodesy. This led to the creation of a new Seismo-geodesy sub-commission\, jointly supported by the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (IASPEI). \nWEGENER\, through meetings organized every two years in and around the Mediterranean is now an important component\, offering a space for collaborative discussion and presentation of research. \nThe 20th WEGENER Assembly 2023 will be organized by the National Office of Mines (ONM which is the Geological Survey of Tunisia) from 24 to 27 October 2023 in Sousse\, Tunisia. The ONM has shown a substantial interest in the processing of GNSS data and the geodynamic study of Tunisia since 2019. \n  \nDownload Call For Papers

SUMMARY:12 Icg 2022
DESCRIPTION:Latest News – 12 ICG postponed to 17-21 September 2023 \nDear friends\,\nlast year\, 2022 seemed a safe time to schedule a conference such as the 12 ICG.\nUnfortunately\, after almost one year\, the health situation all over the world is still very critical resulting in travel restrictions\, cancelled services and important meetings in-person and a near-halt of recreational and entertainment events.\nThis leads us thinking that next year might not be as safe and travel-free as we hoped.\nMoreover\, many similar events in the geosynthetics and geotechnical communities have been postponed and will be held in early or mid 2022: GeoAfrica-February 2022 in Cairo\, GeoAsia-April 2022 in Taipei\, XX ICSMGE-May 2022 in Sydney\, resulting in a crowded overlapping year of conferences.\nFor all these reasons the Organizing Committee of 12 ICG has made the difficult decision to postpone the event to the period 17-21 September 2023\, always in Roma.\nOf course all deadlines are postponed of one year (details about deadlines will be spread shortly and published on website\, social groups and newsletters).\nThis is not a decision we have taken lightly. It is the one which we hope will ensure the operational integrity of the conference\, while protecting everyone’s wellbeing and\, ultimately\, ensuring the event is a healthy and inclusive one for everyone. We feel that we can be true to the “resiliency” mentioned in the title of the conference.\nWe are sure all of you will keep your interest in 12 ICG.\nWe really hope to “leave behind” us all these troubles soon\, and meet each other in Roma!\nWishing you good health\, we remain\nYours sincerely

SUMMARY:3rd JTC1 Workshop on Impact of global changes on landslide risk
DESCRIPTION:The Joint Technical Committee on Natural Slopes and Landslides (JTC1) of FedICGS[1] is delighted to invite you to join us at the 3rd JTC1 Workshop on Impact of global changes on landslide risk\, to be held in Oslo\, Norway on June 7th – 10th\, 2023. \nAnthropogenic impacts and related climate change are unquestionably changing the landslide risk and impacting how we assess and manage the risk(s). \nThe aim of the Workshop is to promote discussion between scientists and engineers on whether we are capable of predicting and quantifying the expected changes in landslide risk and how we could implement the knowledge gained from academic research on landslide risk management into practice. The advanced topics in focus for the discussions include: \n• Rock mass degradation and landslide initiation;\n• Climate and anthropogenic impact on landslide risk in various geographic regions\, including the Arctic;\n• Prediction of landslide mobility and impact footprint\, including landslides initiated at mine tailings storage facilities;\n• Application of modern remote sensing technologies to landslide risk assessment;\n• Landslide risk reduction strategies: risk mitigation\, including early warning and nature-based solutions;\n• Applications of new technologies like machine learning for landslide susceptibility and landslide hazard mapping. \nThe workshop will consist of two lecture days (June 8 and 9)\, and a one-day technical excursion (June 10). The lecture days will be a combination of five keynote lectures\, a number of invited lectures\, the 3rd Hutchinson Lecture as well as discussion sessions. \nYou are invited to submit extended abstracts (up to 4 pages) for oral presentation and short abstracts (max 1 page) for poster presentation. Instructions and templates for abstract submission can be found here.\nThe deadline for submitting both extended and poster abstracts is 31 March 2022. \nThe digital proceedings will be issued right after the workshop and made available on the 3rd JTC1 Workshop website. \nThe Organizing Committee will make a selection of the best abstracts (oral presentations and posters) and invite the authors to provide a full manuscript to be published in a Special Issue of a refereed\, open-access journal. A total of 10 to 15 articles are envisioned for the Special Issue\, which is expected to be published within one year after the workshop. \nFor detailed information check the dedicated website at: https://jtc1-2023.com/ \nLooking forward to seeing you in Oslo\, 2023. \n[1] FediGS: Federation of international Geo-Engineering Societies is composed of ISSMGE: International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering; ISRM: International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering; IAEG: International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment; IGS: International Geosynthetics Society.
